Pallavi Shroff on Creativity in Craft

Zoya, the diamond boutique from the House of Tata, presents ‘Finely Crafted Journeys’ — conversations with women achievers, whose creativity and commitment to their craft has created something truly distinctive.

This time, Zoya’s muse is lawyer Pallavi Shroff, Managing Partner and National Practice Head - Dispute Resolution of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. Under her watch, India’s most respected law firm has taken up some of the largest and most gruelling litigation and arbitration cases in India.

What inspired you to pursue your craft?

I really got into law after my engagement to Shardul. We were students but he was already working in the firm and had demanding work hours. I realized it was going to be very difficult for us to live with different timings and be in different worlds. I decided to join the system, be with him and enjoy it. It was only after I became a lawyer, I realized who my father Late Justice P.N. Bhagwati was and how much he had achieved in one lifetime. He was also very happy that I pursued law.

What does creativity mean to you?

On a personal front, creativity takes many forms; Appreciation of art is creative or cooking, where one creates something from literally nothing can be very creative. I used to dance and that was real creativity too. On a professional front, I believe finding solutions to problems small and big is creativity, because finding solutions in this complex world is not an easy job.

What do you enjoy the most about your craft?

My craft is a fantastic amalgamation of the law, business, society and practical sense. This combination makes it more exciting.

Zoya and me:

In the world of jewellery, credibility is essential. You should be able to trust that the product is good and pure. Integrity of a product is critical and Zoya provides that. Zoya’s collections are also extremely creative and artistic. In the Banaras collection, one can picture the ghat of River Ganga on a pendant or earrings. I look for creativity, integrity and the combination of design and craftsmanship in jewellery. These qualities are seen and celebrated in each exquisite piece of Zoya.
