FINELY CRAFTED JOURNEYS

Expressing Grace Through Resilience: Tanusree Shankar

Zoya honours the profound journey of a woman reconnecting with her feminine self through bespoke creations that celebrate her true essence. In our Finely Crafted Journeys column, we share insights from the lives of iconic women who have left an indelible mark on the world.

In this edition, our muse is Tanusree Shankar, celebrated for her creative and experimental approach to Indian classical dance. Known for seamlessly blending tradition with innovation, she captivates audiences worldwide with graceful storytelling and soulful choreography. Carrying forward the legacy of the Uday Shankar style, Tanusree has not only performed but also choreographed and mentored generations of dancers. Her dedication and artistic vision were recognized with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the nation’s highest honor in performing arts. A familiar face to global cinema audiences through Mira Nair’s The Namesake and the lead female role in the national award-winning film Hemanteer Palki, her journey is a reflection of creativity, resilience, and authentic expression.

What do you enjoy most about your craft?

I grew up in an army family, far from the arts, until my father, sensing my interest, encouraged me to learn dance. It became my breath, my meditation, my medicine. For me, dance is both stillness and surrender, and also a wellspring of joy and energy.

Looking back, what makes you most proud?

I began with only a love for dance. But when life changed—when I lost my husband, my mentor—I had to find my own way. I learned to choreograph, to lead, to teach. I am proud to have stayed true to myself, nurtured the next generation, and lived my craft and the legacy I inherited with sincerity and grace.

How has your journey helped you connect with your feminine spirit?

To me, the feminine is quiet and enduring, soft in its presence yet rooted in authenticity. My journey awakened that essence, helping me embrace my Shakti: gentle when life allowed, steady when it demanded. Dance has been my prayer and offering, a space for reflection, inspiration, and connection to my inner self.

ZOYA and you...

I’m wearing Zoya’s Whispers from the Valley, inspired by the beauty of Kashmir’s seasons. Every season whispers a different story, adding a touch of mystical enigma. I see the rhythm of the seasons in my own life too—spring’s awakening, summer’s vibrance, autumn’s release, winter’s quiet wisdom. Each has shaped and refined me into the person I am today. In Zoya, I recognize that same spirit: a journey of patience, creativity, and purpose, made luminous at every turn.
